Blessings-Shared "Be careful not to do your 'acts of
righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. The Little Old Man We had hit deuces 3 times the night before. As I entered the mens restroom I saw a little old man feverishly wiping the mirrors. Something about the way he looked made me feel sad for him. He was small, hunched, baldish, and way past retirement age. As I was leaving I handed him a $20 dollar bill and told him that we had been blessed and that we like to share our blessings. He was still staring at the money in his hand as I walked away. I walked back to my machine and Martha was waiting to be paid for the deuces she had just hit on her machine! More blessings received- more blessings to be shared. Sometime later I went to use the restroom again and the little old man was mopping the floor. I smiled as I was leaving and handed him another $20. We hit deuces a total of 6 times that night. We make it a point to share our blessings with the casino
cleanup personnel. They make minimum wages and rarely ever get tips. It feels good to watch
their faces brighten when we share a blessing with them
In Our Own Backyard We live in our RV in a seniors only RV Park. It's very nice, clean and
well maintained. But obviously, some of the seniors there still need a little
blessing now and then. I like to take my walks in the summertime well after the sun goes down
because of the heat. But even then the temperature is very hot in July in
Vegas. Several times during these walks I noticed an older travel trailer which
obviously did not have a working air-conditioner. All the windows were opened
but I knew that it was just allowing the hot outside air to flow freely to the
inside. During the daytime, I saw the same scenario. We felt the need to somehow help this person . Having experienced the comforts of a portable evaporative cooler before we
had a permanent larger unit installed, we decided that a
portable unit would help bring the temperature down in the small trailer.
After purchasing one for around $200 similar to our own, we had a park
maintenance man leave it at the doorway so that we could remain anonymous. And because of the "low" power consumption of the cooler, the electric bill should be no problem for someone on a fixed income. Now everytime we pass and see the cooler in the doorway, we get a warm
feeling inside.
It was a hot July day and Martha had to go to Walgreens to pickup a
prescription. I normally went inside with her but today for some reason I
decided to wait in the car. I noticed a pregnant woman sitting under the veranda near
the wall. She was sweating and looked miserable as a contankerous little one about a year old moved between
her and the father.
No one sits in the July sun in the desert for no reason. I felt the urge
to share a blessing with them. I reached in my shirt pocket and got a $20 bill
and placed it in one of our envelopes along with a card. Just as Martha returned to the car, the van parked next to us moved and I saw the real reason they were sitting there. There was an old Cheverolet sedan with the hood up directly to their front. Obviously they needed more than $20 so I put a $100 bill inside the envelope and Martha handed it out the car window to the man as we passed. Later that day, we returned home and had a message on the answer machine from the man telling of the repairs he was able to purchase and sincerely thanking us. But we also learned a lesson from this experience. |
